Ran a 7.5 miler today with varying grade.

Avg. pace: 6:40

I'm thinking about doing little 3 milers in the morning to add a little mileage. Not sure if I have the will to do it though.

Welcome to the blog!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 14:10:27

Welcome to the blog! Easy 3 in the morning is a great idea. The will is a philosophical question. Have your favorite family member commit to pouring some cold water on you at 6:00 AM (or however early it needs to be) if you are not out of bed by then. There will be a will. Set up a bedtime curfew for yourself as well so you get enough rest with some cruel and unusual punishment administered in the case of failure. This will make your training productive - otherwise if you do not sleep enough you easily overtrain.

From Craig on Wed, Feb 06, 2008 at 19:12:33

Kyle- welcome. I feel like you are starting at where I have almost peaked as a runner. Such great potential and you have a lot of time ahead of you to improve on top of it. You can get some great advice on this site from elite runners.

Hey, here's a belated "Welcome to the blog" from me, too! What are you doing tomorrow? Hard is relative... :)

From amanda on Thu, Feb 07, 2008 at 00:12:45

Yes I was at the track meet Pine View hosted last year. So, you live in alta and you think we don't snowboard down here hahaha. Well I don't really but my friends do. The nice thing about living here is that it is warm, but just a hour away is brianhead. The best snow on earth. The "ultra-hott!" part on my blog is from Ruth lol you got to love friends!

Today was a hard day.  3 sets of 2 miles.  I don't know if it qualifies as threshold, but o well.

first: 11:20

6min. break

second: 11:00

6 min. break

third: 10:45

From amanda on Thu, Feb 07, 2008 at 23:45:58

What do you mean "we can pull backside 3s" Breaking into the 6 minutes doesn't qualife as threshold. That is funny. What do you run in track? I would guess the two mile or the mile.

To answer the question in your title- I don't know if it is rude, but you better not let them pass you later in the race, or you deserve whatever crap they dish out!

From amanda on Sat, Feb 09, 2008 at 16:08:45

So you don't know what a threshold miles is. I don't think I do either lol. I don't really know that much about snowbroading either. You sound like you do, but whatever. Good job on you miles this week.

You are aiming for 60 this week that is a lot. Good luck with that don't kill yourself. hahahah I am just trying to run as much as I can this week. Between all the things I am trying to do. Good job on waking up in the mornings. I need to more so I can fit in more running, but it makes me soooooo sleepy.

From Sierra on Wed, Feb 13, 2008 at 23:09:58

Lucky you have a treadmill!! This storm is pretty bad where I'm at (Eagle Mountain, Lehi.) And I don't have a treadmill so I couldn't run! Looks like you have an amazing week ahead of you! Good Luck!!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Feb 15, 2008 at 22:59:04

Big question is why 1:16 on the Painter's course is all you've got if you can do 3x3200 like this. You should have been able to run 1:12 at the very least. Are you in better shape, is there something wrong with the treadmill calibration, or have you just gotten good at running on a treadmill?

It would be nice to see you race. You can do the Strider's 5 K tomorrow in Ogden, and/or the SLC Track Club 15 K next Saturday.

While increasing the mileage, it would be a good idea to just run easy for a month to get used to it and keep speed work to the minimum. As much as you race, you probably do not anything in addition to your races to fine tune your speed. Once you are sure you can run 60 miles a week week after week, you can start adding moderate speed sessions.

Amanda - 60 miles a week is not a lot. It is a base survival mileage for a distance runner regardless of his specialty. Some middle distance runners are able to run to their potential without running more. If US high schoolers could understand that, sub-4:00 mile and sub-9:00 2 mile would become a common occurrence, and the 30th place in the Olympic Trials marathon would finish under 2:10.

My first race was the mile.  I ran it in 4:40.   Then I did the 2 mile in 10:14.  I was ahead of Luke Puskedra for a little bit, but he was just running easy, then he schooled me in the last 800.  Immedietly after I did the 4*400.  I was the first leg and did a 58.  Overall, a good race.  Not a whole lot of fast times due to the wind, but hey, more room for improvement later!

Good training in March with the exception of California trip travel downtime, but still good job on getting out and doing something rather than just scoring a goose egg.

Assuming your body took the training in, and you can find a race with good conditions in the next couple of weeks you should be running a modest PR in 1600, and a bigger one in 3200.

Do you feel ready for the rule of "the day does not end until I've run 8 miles"?

It was freezing today.  At the meet I did the 2 mile, but only pulled in a 10:15 despite a 5:02 first mile.  I guess I just froze up...o well.  I'll think towards saturday.

Nice job in your meet. You did good with the freezing cold. That is why I live where I do. To stay warm JK

1 mile easy, then 5 400s in about 68, with a lap in between, then 2 miles easy.

I can still feel the cold from yesterday...that was the first time it's snowed on me in a track meet this year.

Well you may think we are lucky, but we don't get snow so I think you are lucky. But that sucks that it snow when you were running the 3200. My meet was windy and long.

Really windy today, but really fast workout.  I ran 8 300s at 46 sec. pace, then 1 200 pretty fast too.  Warm up and cool down of 3 miles

George Barlow? Don't know him. Where is he from? And Luke's Arcadia 3200 was amazing! I'm going to feel helpless at state this year. Nice workout! I wish I could be doing that again. No hard workouts this week.

From Sasha Pachev on Tue, Apr 15, 2008 at 23:46:08

Karl - it would be difficult to catch up to Luke in a couple of months, but you can run at his level next year. You have good speed, but your mileage still needs work. Do not skip days. Do not run end a day with less than 8 miles on the odometer, and once you get used to that, move it up to 10.

It was freezing today! The snow kept flurrying on and off. I just ran the mile at the track meet, and I still froze. My time was aweful; 4:43, but I guess it was cold and windy.  I'll just have to keep working harder.  I might do some more workout tonight though.

I am still sick and my legs still hurt!  When I got to the meet I found out that it was super windy and that I was the third slowest kid in my heat...it was pretty bad.  I ran the mile though, and pulled off a ninth, which I was very proud of.  I ran a 30 min. cooldown, then went to work.

I'm getting better and my legs don't hurt as bad today!  We did a weird speed workout though.  it was a 400, then 3*200, then 3*150 with 200 recovery.  It was basically an extended sprinter workout and it hurt!  I hope it helps me tho.  We'll see...

Today there was a huge gas leak at our school and everyone got out early!  It was pretty fun.  It was a recovery day, and my coach said no more than 4, so thats what I did.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

Today coach randomly told us we would be running a mile race.  This was bad news, because my lunch was just chips and chocolate.  I ran my first lap in 62, had a 2:12 half mile, but only held on to a 4:45 mile.  During the last 800 I felt aweful, and after the race I went and threw up.  A very bad day for Kyle...

You learned something about diet today. That is how I learned to eat right. If you eat bad and train/race hard you feel it. But on the positive side of things, you can go through a quarter in 62 thinking you have 3 more left. Which means that 4:08 is not that far from reality, it is a matter of building endurance. And, incidentally, you repeated my 800 PR in your split. Yes, that's all I've got in 800 meters, and that is fast enough to run a 2:23 marathon. Which is why I tell every high schooler that can easily break my 800 PR and would be a good 40-50 minutes or more behind my marathon PR that they need to work on their endurance rather than speed.

It was snowing again!  The track was super cold!  I did a 400, 300, 200, in 4:35 pace with a lap in between.  Then I went home and did 4 miles with 2 800s and 2 400s at 5:00 pace.  Basically a slow speed workout to keep my muscles ready, but not stress them.

P.S. my coach is only letting me do less than 40 miles a week!  I hate it and don't know what to do...If anyone has suggestions, please tell me.

Hey have you seen my weeks? Barely over 20 miles! I know it feels weird but for ruuning shorter races your legs need to be conditioned to sprinting and lots of intervals. During the last week or so you really don't need that many long miles, just quick fast quality workouts with less quantity. But nothing to get your legs really tired.
